Getting Dressed. What to Wear as a Stay at Home Dad

By | March 26, 2018

Like many dads, I don’t put a lot of thought into what I wear when I get dressed every day. Despite my lack of effort, I have noticed a pattern in how I dress. It seems that I am wearing the same thing every day. I like to think of it as my stay at home dad uniform. I know I am not alone. Many of the other stay at home dads I know dress the same way. There was never a memo sent out on what to wear. We just picked the clothing that was best for our job.

The Dress Code

Like I said above, I don’t plan what I’m going to wear. When I get dressed the most I do is check that the clothes are clean. I don’t worry about matching or style. I dress for comfort. In fact, I would say not getting dressed up is one of the best parts of being a stay at home dad. Well, there is the whole staying with the kids part which is great, but mostly I love that I get to wear comfortable clothing.
Let me walk you through my normal morning. I am woken up by a flying powerbomb to my stomach/groin area performed by my five-year-old. I fold over in pain while she laughs. Then, I try to ignore the kids and go back to sleep but soon they have me out of bed and I jump in the shower. Now, this part is optional to many dads. If they aren’t leaving the house or the kids are being especially needy the shower might not happen. For me, I need it to wake me up. But now it is time to get dressed. Getting Dressed

Once I get out of the shower, it is time to get dressed.  Most of the time, except in the summer when shorts and sandals rule, I am a jeans guy. Levi’s Jeans if you were curious, preferably in a darker color. I know some other dads are more of sweatpants fans and I get that they are comfortable. When I am really lounging I wear them too, but day to day inside and out nothing replaces a good pair of Levi’s.

My apologies to the brands whose clothing I am “modeling”

Up top, it is again weather dependent. Summers and warm days I am all about the teeshirt depicting something I find funny. I wear one of these almost every day of the year. In the winter, I need to add something warmer. That is when my hoodie comes into play. Currently, I am wearing the Tommy John Go Anywhere Hoodie They were kind enough to send me. But since my wife insists on washing it after I wear it, I also have a few other zip-up hoodies that I wear too. Why hoodies? It has a built-in hat and I don’t have any hair.
Finally to complete the outfit is a pair of Saucony running shoes. I like the extra support, as well as how disgusted my wife is when I wear athletic shoes to anything not athletic.

About the picture…..

In completing this post I had to ask my wife to take my picture. She took a bunch of pictures and sent me this one.  I asked if there were any other pictures that didn’t look so goofy. Her response of “no you are in all of them” made it clear my future as a clothing model has ended before it began.
In the end, it really doesn’t matter what you ware when you stay home to watch the kids. All that really matters is you are not covered in baby vomit, baby poop, and that you are comfortable. What more can we ask for? Well, we can ask for a little bit of quiet, but believe me that just isn’t realistic.
